Alocasia reginula, commonly known as Black Velvet Alocasia, is a compact, tropical plant prized for its striking dark foliage with silvery veins. Here’s how to care for it:
1. Light:
Prefers bright, indirect light.
Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Can tolerate lower light but may grow slower.
2. Watering:
Keep the soil slightly moist but not soggy.
Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings.
Use distilled or rainwater if possible to avoid leaf browning due to minerals in tap water.
3. Humidity:
Requires high humidity (60%+).
Mist occasionally, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier.
4. Temperature:
Prefers 65-80°F (18-27°C).
Keep away from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes.
5. Soil:
Use a well-draining, airy mix:
50% potting soil
25% perlite or pumice
25% orchid bark or coco coir
6. Fertilizer:
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted to half strength) every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.
7. Repotting:
Repot every 1-2 years in spring if rootbound.
Choose a pot just slightly larger than the current one.
8. Propagation:
Best propagated by rhizome division during repotting.
9. Pests & Problems:
Common pests: Spider mites, thrips, and mealybugs—check undersides of leaves and treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Crispy edges: Low humidity or underwatering.
Drooping leaves: Could be due to overwatering, underwatering, or stress from environmental changes
